The Ultimate Museum Book, a work that brings together the conclusions of research carried out in more than 150 institutions around the world with the aim of compiling their best practices regarding sustainability.
In this book we identified 33 of these museums’ initiatives that proved to have a positivesocial or environmental impact, with measures ranging from carbon footprint reduction to the implementation of inclusive and responsible practices for the community.
The book, organized in fact sheets with key data on each of these initiatives and examples of museums where they have been put into practice, is meant to be a practical guide for both new and consolidated museums that wish to integrate sustainability into their day-to-day work. Nonetheless, the book is not limited to listing a series of best practices, as it invites the sector’s professionals to reflect and take action by highlighting museums’ importance in the construction of a society rooted in sustainability.
The 150 public and private museums involved include some of the most important ones in the world (such as the Panama Biomuseum and the Grand Egyptian Museum), as well as other smaller and more specialized museums (such as the Tate Modern and the Ghent Design Museum), which proves that any museum institution can commit to incorporating sustainability as one of its key features.
The described measures include the use of recycled, innovative, organic or low-emission building materials,water footprint reduction, circularity initiatives, nature-basedsolutions (such as renaturalization, green roofs or biodiversity islands), sustainability-focused design (using natural resources for lighting and air conditioning), accessibility and inclusion, collaboration with local communities, reporting and measurement, etc.
