THE IMMERSIVE EXHIBITION LIFE AND WORK OF FRIDA KAHLO CREATED BY ACCIONA CULTURA WINS PRESTIGIOUS RED DOT AWARD

Al Shindagha Museum, developed by Dubai Municipality in collaboration with Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and Dubai Economy and Tourism Department, includes clustered historic houses that showcase Dubai’s history and culture using the most innovative technologies.

The Museum combines conceptual exhibits, interactives, video projections and collection displays to create a unique experience for visitors.

ACCIONA Cultura has completed the exhibition implementation of four pavilions of the Al Shindagha Museum in Dubai: Traditions, Life on the Land, Traditional Food House, and House of Poetry.

Dubai Municipality (DM) selected ACCIONA Cultura to carry out the partial design, technical development and museographic implementation of four stages of the exhibition project, which comprises 17 clustered historic houses covering a total exhibition area of 7,980 m2.

Al Shindagha Museum is a new world class heritage museum in the Dubai Historic District that promotes the city’s historical, artistic and cultural heritage using the most innovative technologies. Al Shindagha is the area where the Al Maktoum ruling family of Dubai originally lived. The historic houses have been reconstructed using authentic methods by the DM Architectural Heritage and Antiquities Department in order to respect the original construction as much as possible.

Covering an area of 35,000 m2, Al Shindagha Museum will display more large collections with pieces of great historical and cultural value in an authentic context.

The museum is divided into several themed pavilions made up of clustered historic houses. Each pavilion focuses on a different topic relating to Dubai’s history and culture, within a number of overarching themes. The Traditions, Life on the Land, Traditional Food House, and House of Poetry pavilions have been developed and implemented entirely by ACCIONA Cultura. The Traditional Food House and House of Poetry have been designed by ACCIONA Cultura, and Traditions and Life on the Land pavilions are based on the design by Ralph Appelbaum Associates.

The museum project combines the most innovative experiential, participatory and interactive technologies through multisensory and immersive video installations and projection mapping, together with traditional objects and informative graphics.

Traditions

The Traditions pavilion at Shindagha Museum includes four houses dedicated to different traditions in Emirati culture, covering an exhibition area of 2,950 m2:

The Traditional Craft House is a space to explore the country’s handicrafts and understand their place in modern society through various ‘hands-on’ and interactive resources. This House shows significant collections of artefacts made by Emirati craftsmen using metal, pottery, wood and textile techniques. People can also learn how to make embroidery, talli (a traditional United Arab Emirates handicraft that creates an intricate adornment for all types of women’s clothing) or use a loom.

The Traditional Beauty & Adornment House celebrates the array of clothes, hairstyles and adornments, as well as the traditional ways of wearing them. The visitor will be surprised with a unique journey through time and place, immersing themselves in environments that showcase the traditional dress and adornment practices of Dubai. Mannequins will illustrate the various forms of dress for work or special occasions from the mountains to the coast.

In the Traditional Jewellery House displays materials, techniques and designs of jewellery pieces. Gold, silver, pearls and gemstones enrich the jewels that have been worn by generations of Emirati women. On the other hand, men used to carry a traditional knife, the Khanjar, which was sometimes of great value.

Finally, in the Traditional Healthcare House, visitors will learn about traditional medicines and cosmetics, treatments, herbal remedies and other elements used in personal hygiene. The exhibition incorporates topics related to science, history and human nature and is structured around easy-to-understand explanations, making it an enriching experience for all types of visitors. Plants in the three courtyards showcase the flora mentioned in the Quran, especially those connected to healing and cures with specific reference to UAE.

The four houses combine the richness of Dubai’s cultural heritage with the use of modern technologies. The AV productions record testimonies of the former way of life in the Emirate while interactive displays convey how the artefacts were made and used in the past.

Life on the Land

The Life on the Land pavilion covers an exhibition area of 3,280 m2 comprising 10 houses and a garden showcasing the Life on the Land theme. The exhibition focuses on the different land environments in the UAE – desert, coast and mountain – and how Emiratis used and shared natural resources to thrive and build communities. This ‘wave’ also includes an orientation space, a native plant garden, a café/restaurant, and an education centre.
Seven main themes contextualize the exhibition: The Land, Expressions, Water, Flora and Fauna, Trade, Journeys, and Landscape Garden.

In the area exploring The Land, knowledge of environments is a fundamental key to the prospering of life in Dubai. By connecting Dubai’s diverse landscapes in an episodic manner, accompanied by traditional methods of travelling and tracking, visitors will gain an immersive and local perspective from the past.

The Expressions area offers a more in-depth look at the intangible heritage of Emirati culture, including music, poetry and folktales. The pavilion captures how people were able to make a life here, and how the land has become a source of inspiration for its people. The creative expressions of the people of Dubai are a celebration of this life – the essence of their mastery of, respect for and intimate connection to their environment – communicated through the intangible heritage of performance, poetry and verse.

Meanwhile, Water explores the way in which water was obtained and distributed in each environment of the Emirates and how this enabled the settlement of communities across the UAE. Water is essential to all life on land and its availability, properties, and functions have all informed and influenced movement, settlement, agriculture, community growth and social activities across Dubai and the UAE. Despite its scarcity and the tremendous efforts required to both locate and extract it, the ingenious people of Dubai have worked together to pursue and sustain this cherished source of life.

The Flora and Fauna pavilion introduces visitors to the animals and plants of Dubai. The pavilion celebrates the incredible diversity of wildlife across the landscapes of the UAE, and explores how the people of the Emirates took advantage of available resources for food, medicine, building materials and even transport. Both plants and animals were a key resource, found across Dubai’s diverse landscapes. The cultivation of local agriculture and use of native plants in different environments provided a valuable food source as well as material for building structures or weaving household goods.

The Trade pavilion shows how the trade of goods was shaped by the landscapes of Dubai, and how the Emirates have become a thriving place of commerce and exchange. Visitors will understand how the resources sourced from the Emirates were traded for international imports, or exported to other countries and regions. The importance of the souq as a place for trade of all types will be featured.
The Journeys area shows how people used to travel across the Emirates. Moving for trade, for pilgrimage, to escape hot weather, or to find pastures and water, Emiratis have travelled by camel, horse, donkey, and more recently by motor vehicles. The rigours of travel, the goods that were carried and routes taken will all be explored across the pavilion.

Overall, the museum creates a unique experience for visitors, combining conceptual exhibits, interactive screens, videos projections and collection displays. Visitors will enjoy the moments such as a projection into a kaleidoscope of wildlife, the feeling of traveling back in time to visit a souq, or hearing songs that evoke an earlier Dubai.
Finally, a selection of plants has been allocated within the Landscape Garden area of Life on the Land. More than 678 terrestrial plant species are currently known to grow in the United Arab Emirates across its myriad environments, having adapted to their landscapes. The trees, plants and herbs displayed within the garden area were used for consumption, for animal fodder, for building materials, or for medicinal uses.

Traditional Food House

The Traditional Food House covers an exhibition area of 450 m2 full of wonders exhibition. The visitor will experience and learn that eating is a way of keeping the heritage and history alive, with most Emirati dishes having their own fascinating story.

Food is integral to family and community life in the UAE. Food is shared among family members and relatives during special occasions and life passages, as well as served to guests, who have a place of honour in the home. Because of the scarcity of food in the past, there is great value placed on food and people as hosts for guests and the consumption of food, which has evolved into an elegant system of ritual and hospitality around food.

Overall, the museum creates a unique experience for visitors, who will get the opportunity to cook by themselves the most popular and traditional dishes through an interactive table, or explore the extraordinary environments that shape the rich variety of ingredients used and dishes across the UAE. Visitors will also enjoy moments such a floor projection choreography of plates and ingredients, which represents each meal of the day, surrounded by an immersive soundscape that walks through each different meal and the joy of the people sharing the meal together.

House of Poetry

The House of Poetry includes a dynamic and inspiring exhibition of 1,300 m2 that demonstrates the importance of the poetry in Emirati life. It also emphasizes on how poetry highlighted many important political, social, financial, and even personal topics and on how the impact of poetry did change the history in the country. Content focuses on Emirati Poetry, but broadens its scope to the wider Gulf and International by the five main themes considered “Introduction to Poetry world”, “Emirati Poetry”, “Gulf Poetry”, “Arab Poetry” and “Universal Poetry”.

ACCIONA CULTURA DELIVERS FOUR EXHIBITION PAVILIONS OF THE Al SHINDAGHA MUSEUM IN DUBAI

80,000 people have already visited the exhibition, located in Madrid’s Teatro Instante (C/ Palos de la Frontera 20).

The exhibition will open in the Netherlands and Puerto Rico in the coming months. It is also set to reach Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan and Australia throughout 2023.

The Life and Work of Frida Kahlo exhibition has been extended until May 31st, one month longer than initially planned, due to the success of this immersive experience, designed and promoted by ACCIONA, which more than 80,000 visitors have already enjoyed since its inauguration in December 2021.

Once it finishes its run at Madrid’s Teatro Instante (C/ Palos de la Frontera 20), the exhibition will embark on an international tour that will take it to the Netherlands and Puerto Rico during the remainder of 2022.

Afterwards, it will be exhibited in Mexico (Frida Kahlo’s native country), in several Asian countries such as Singapore and Japan, in Australia and in New Zealand.

Life and Work of Frida Kahlo has become one of the benchmark exhibitions in Madrid’s cultural and leisure scene, as it offers visitors an innovative experience halfway between cinema, large-scale audiovisual shows and traditional museums.

To this end, ACCIONA Cultura has converted the Teatro Instante – a former garage in Madrid’s Delicias neighborhood – into a unique exhibition space with 1,129m2 of HD projection surfaces (including walls and floors) and 38 state-of-the-art projectors that bring to life more than 100 of Frida’s pictorial, literary and photographic works.

The experience is completed with an original soundtrack created by composer and pianist Arturo Cardelús, a Goya award nominee, which has recently been uploaded to Spotify under the title Life and Work of Frida Kahlo and already has more than 25,000 plays.

The exhibition has been curated by Roxana Velásquez, the executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art, and Deidré Guevara, curator of the Frida and I exhibition at the Georges Pompidou Museum in Paris.

PARALLEL ACTIVITIES

In the heat of the exhibition, a series of parallel activities have also taken place, both in the Teatro Instante itself and in cultural and educational centers in the capital. These initiatives, in the form of workshops, roundtables and/or conferences, aimed to show different artistic aspects of Frida and her ascendancy in current art.

Therefore, at the Casa del Lector in the Matadero Madrid exhibition space, two workshops for families were held on the work of the Mexican artist (Frida Kahlo. The Queen of the Selfie, and Explorers of Art: Frida Kahlo). In collaboration with Madrid’s University of Design, Innovation and Technology (ESNE), a roundtable discussion was also held regarding immersive experiences in contemporary art environments, with the participation of experts from the cultural sector.

In addition, the exhibition was visited by high schools, for which a Diary of Exercises for High Schools has been designed as an educational roadmap to be implemented in the classroom after the visit, as well as by neighborhood associations such as that of Arganzuela.

Life and Work of Frida Kahlo has an estimated duration of one hour and a maximum capacity of 230 people per show. It is open from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm every day of the week and tickets can be purchased in advance on the following website: https://www.accionaexhibitions.com/

The exhibition is suitable for all audiences (with special discounts for groups and families).

POSITIVE IMPACT

Another innovative aspect of this exhibition is its commitment to creating a positive social and environmental impact both in Madrid, where it premiered, and in Mexico, in honor of Frida Kahlo’s native country.

This goal has been taken into account since the conception of the exhibition, for which a regenerative design was carried out, including an analysis of the entire life cycle of the used materials, as well as an exhaustive evaluation of energy efficiency.

The Life and Work of Frida Kahlo exhibition will be carbon neutral, like all of ACCIONA Cultura’s exhibitions. To this end, CO2 emissions are minimized and any unavoidable emissions are calculated and offset through the acquisition of Certified Emission Reductions (CER), granted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In line with its Sustainability Master Plan, ACCIONA goes one step further and is committed to leaving a permanent positive footprint with its projects. In this case, it will plant trees both in Mexico and in Madrid, in collaboration with local authorities and within the framework of renaturalization projects that, apart from their environmental benefit, create a positive social impact.

The entire process is endorsed by the UNE EN ISO 20121:2013 certificate, which certifies that all the tasks involved in the design, execution, assembly and disassembly of the exhibition are in line with the strictest sustainability criteria.

THE EXHIBITION “LIFE AND WORK OF FRIDA KAHLO” OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE PUBLIC

The event, designed and produced by ACCIONA Cultural Engineering, will welcome visitors from December 2nd to February 30th at the Teatro Instante, on C/Palos de la Frontera 20.

The exhibit will generate a positive impact through nature-based solutions and social aid projects in both Madrid and Mexico.

“Life and Work of Frida Kahlo” will be on display in other Spanish, European and Asian cities, including Barcelona, Copenhagen and Bangkok.

The audiovisual exhibition Life and Work of Frida Kahlo, designed, produced and promoted by ACCIONA’s cultural management and production division ACCIONA Cultural Engineering, will be inaugurated on December 2nd. It will take place in Madrid’s Delicias neighbourhood (Teatro Instante, C/Palos de la Frontera 20), at an innovative exhibit space created ad hoc for this event.

Life and Work of Frida Kahlo combines cinematic and traditional museum experiences, featuring large-scale audiovisual elements, which set the tone for the exhibit. More than a hundred plastic artworks, literary pieces and photographs pay tribute to the renown Mexican painter. Displaying 2,500 animated photograms, hand-painted by various artists, the exhibition brings Frida Kahlo’s masterpieces to life.

ACCIONA Cultural Engineering designed the innovative event space, in and old bus depot, specifically for this event, which boasts 1,129 m2 of HD projection surface (including walls and floors) and 38 state-of-the-art projectors.

The exhibition was curated by Roxana Velásquez Martínez del Campo, executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art, and Deidré Guevara, curator of the exhibition Frida and Me at the Georges Pompidou Museum in Paris.

Life and Work of Frida Kahlo invites the audience to contemplate on some of the painter’s well-known masterpieces (including her famous self-portraits, The Wounded Deer or The portrait of Doctor Eloesser), and to discover other lesser known artworks (such as The Suicide of Dorothy Hale, or What the Water Gave Me), all the while contextualizing Kahlo’s persona and highlighting her resilience and personal strength.

The exhibition offers an artistic interpretation of the artwork and life of Frida Kahlo, allowing visitors to understand her multiple aspects: as a woman, as a painter and as a historical figure.

The event’s narrative is structured into three main thematic areas. The first part focuses on the artist in all her splendor, connecting Frida’s work with the testimonies of her peers as a way to showcase her relevance in both the intellectual and artistic movements of her time. The second part reveals Frida’s more intimate side, introducing the Kahlo family, delving into the artist’s roots and friendships, and analyzing a key event in her history: the traumatic accident that led to her rebirth as a painter. The third part recreates the Blue House, the home where Frida Kahlo was born, and where she lived, painted and died.

The creative and production techniques selected for the sensory elements serve to reproduce and reinterpret the artist’s pictorial style. A detailed graphic research of her paintings was necessary to bring the elements and characters of her work to life. Likewise, to recreate atmospheres and contextualize events in her life, illustrations were created that combine photographic imagery, drawings and collages, symbolizing a dedicated and surreal interpretation of Frida’s world.

Each scene is accompanied by an original musical soundtrack created by Goya-nominated composer and pianist Arturo Cardelús, creating emotional rhythms and enhancing the desired visual narrative. The melodies include a wide variety of instruments and sound effects, combined with traditional European and Mexican music, in clear reference to the origins of the artist. The soundtrack was recorded with the Budapest Art Orchestra under the direction of its conductor, Peter Pejtsik.

The overall experience has an estimated duration of one hour and a maximum capacity of 230 people, which will be adjusted according to health protocols to ensure visitors’ safety during Covid-19.

POSITIVE IMPACT

This exposition is committed to generating a positive social and environmental impact both in Madrid, where it debuts, and in Mexico, Frida Kahlo’s native country.

Since the very conception of the exhibition, its regenerative design and purpose prioritized analyzing the life cycle of all materials used, as well as a thorough evaluation of energy efficiency.

Life and Work of Frida Kahlo will be a CO2 neutral exhibit, as are all the events carried out by ACCIONA Cultural Engineering. To make this a reality, all CO2 emissions are minimized and those that are unavoidable are offset through the acquisition of Certified Emission Reductions (CER), granted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

ACCIONA is going one step further and is committed to leaving a permanent positive footprint with this event. The company will coordinate, along with local authorities, three tree planting activities in both Mexico and Madrid, within the framework of renaturalization projects that benefit the environmental and generate a positive social impact.

The entire process is certified by UNE ISO 20121:2013, which endorses that all the tasks involved in the design, execution, assembly and disassembly of the exhibition are in accordance with the strictest sustainability criteria.

MADRID TO HOST “LIFE AND WORK OF FRIDA KAHLO” EXHIBIT

The Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa (BMBK) cultural project aims to preserve and rehabilitate a major landmark in the history of the UAE.

Located in Al Ain, a Unesco World Heritage Site, the 2,840 m² exhibition space links the nation’s pre-oil history and heritage with the present day.

ACCIONA Cultural Engineering has completed the exhibition implementation of Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa, a historic house located in the Unesco World Heritage site of Al Ain, in the United Arab Emirates.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi selected ACCIONA to carry out the technical development and museographic implementation of the 2,840m² exhibition space.

Bait Mohamed bin Khalifa (BMBK) is a cultural restoration project that aims to preserve and rehabilitate this historic home into a vibrant community center. BMBK is one of few remaining examples of the architecture of the ‘Transition Period’, between 1960 and 1970, the crucial period between the nation’s pre and post-oil eras. Although the home has a traditional layout, it was built using concrete, an innovative material at that time. As a result, the house provides valuable insights into the changing building techniques and the urban development of Al Ain during the transition to modernity.

The house was built in 1958, near the Al Ain oasis, for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan (1909-1979) and his fourth wife, their daughters and sons. The layout and functions of the house reflect the traditional family structure and social rules of the time, with the strict separation of public and private life.

An extensive conservation program carried out by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has seen the historic home repaired, restored and rehabilitated into a vibrant community center, which is set to resume its function as a gathering place for the Al Ain community.

ACCIONA Cultural Engineering, which specializes in the design and implementation of projects for museums, expo pavilions, exhibitions, events and interiors, carried out the technical development and museographic implementation of seven exhibitions rooms: Discovery room, Period room, Building 1, Building 2, Conserving room, Honoring and Living rooms, in addition to exhibition displays in the courtyard. These include glazing walls with archival images, artefacts, and showcases, models of the original house and subsequent modifications, set designs and ten  audio-visual and multimedia productions. Optical theaters with puppet ghost effects reproduce home life during Sheik Mohammed bin Khalifa’s time.

The complex will house temporary exhibitions in addition to the permanent display. It will also make spaces available for hire by the public, creative and educational programs, family activities in the RFLCT Arts Center and an onsite branch of Notes café.
